There’s plenty to do in Marin, from a day at the beach to hiking Mount Tam to browsing the shops in one of our many small downtowns. Whatever you do, you’ll need to eat at some point. Our favorite: work up an appetite with a long walk in Larkspur, then grab lunch at our favorite walkable burrito spot.
Here are a few of our tried-and-true taquerias in Marin County.
1. Burritoville Cafe
Burritoville Cafe has been a family favorite for over 20 years. As a Redwood High student I spent plenty of time here, and Naomi and I hope our son will have plenty of childhood memories here too. The menu is big, but my personal favorite is the kids’ pinto bean, cheese and rice burrito with their mild salsa: the perfect size and proportions. The seating area is cute and authentic, with a train track above the tables that holds our three-year-old’s attention.
2. Puentez Taqueria
In the Montecito Shopping Center in central San Rafael, Puentez arguably serves the best carnitas burritos in Marin. This family-owned business is another favorite from 20-plus years ago; the owners’ kids, once much smaller than me, now help run the place and do an awesome job. As fairly new vegetarians, Naomi and I love their pinto bean, cheese, rice and steamed vegetable burritos. With broccoli, cauliflower and carrots inside, you feel good after you eat one. If you eat meat, definitely go for the carnitas.
3. Grilly’s
We love Grilly’s in Mill Valley for its convenience, great food, authentic vibe and support for local schools and the community. The burritos are sizable, and they’re known for their chicken taco salad and house-made aguas frescas. As usual, we often go for the classic bean, cheese and rice burrito.
